LIVESTRONG at the YMCA

In 2007, the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the YMCA of the USA created LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a physical activity and wellness program for people affected by cancer. The YMCA is the perfect partner: with nationwide accessibility, the YMCA maintains exceptional recognition, trust and credibility in community health and physical activity. Through a four-year collaboration, the physical activity and wellness program will be embedded and rolled out into the entire YMCA movement. Ongoing research shows the benefits of physical activity in reducing fatigue, improving mood, muscle strength and physical endurance after completing cancer treatment. With 12 million cancer survivors living in the United States today, it is increasingly important that cancer survivors have access to an exercise environment that is both safe and accommodating to their needs.

In May 2010, the YMCA of Greater St. Louis was selected as an association to host LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, and the O'Fallon Family YMCA, along with the St. Charles County Family YMCA, was selected as the branch to introduce it to the Greater St. Louis area.

At the O'Fallon Family YMCA, this program is open to all cancer survivors and their families. Throughout the duration of the 12 week program, participants will attend LIVESTRONG classes twice a week that consist of cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and educated discussion. Incorporating work-outs (for mind, body & spirit) into daily routines is encouraged, and participants can take advantage of the many resources throughout our organization at no cost.
