Martial Arts & Self Defense

Women's Self Defense

The YMCA values healthy living and strives to provide the necessary tools for you to achieve a healthy lifestyle. Living healthy also means protecting your overall safety and well-being.
The class, instructed by Robert Collingwood, a 7th degree black belt, will teach women the basic skills and techniques to defend herself against an attacker. Throughout the class, women will build confidence and proficiency.

RyuTe Karate

Ages 6 and up. RyuTe is unique in that tuite (joint-locking techniques ), kyushojitsu (nerve point techniques), fighting theory, martial arts history, philosophy, and spirituality, and full contact sparring with protective bogu gear (for adult class only) are integral parts of this martial art. Kobudo (oriental weaponry) is taught to advanced students.

In the children’s class, the development of self-discipline, respect for others, self respect, balance, and coordination are emphasized. Tournament competition is not stressed. Class time includes discussions of martial arts history and its philosophy of self-discipline.

INSTRUCTOR: Robert Collingwood is a seventh degree black belt with over 35 years of experience in RyuTe Karate.

Karate for Kids with Special Needs

Parent/guardian participation required.  A class for children 6-12 years old with ADHD, autism, or Asperger Syndrome. Class is limited to 6 students. Parent/guardian participation is required to not only provide parents/guardians an opportunity to participate in an activity with the children, instead of watching from the sidelines, but to assist the instructor, Robert Collingwood in understanding each child's specific needs and learning style. Karate basics (blocks, kicks and punches), balance and eye/hand coordination are taught along with simple self defense techniques. Emphasis is placed on self-control and consideration for others in an informal, relaxed classroom setting.
