Skill Instruction

Those who are looking for some non-traditional exercise, the Y is the right place!  Many unique programs at the Edward Jones Family YMCA teach recreational and life skills.

Martial Arts

Beginning/Intermediate TaeKwonDo

Ages 6 to adult. Teaches respect, responsibility, discipline, beginning aspects of self-defense using basic hand and foot techniques. Advance from White through Green Belt. Class held in gymnasium.
Thursdays, 7:00-8:00 p.m.
Class fee $78* ($72 for each additional family member);
Full members pay only $41* ($35 for each additional family member)
*TaeKwonDo uniform may be purchased separately from instructor for $35 *

Advanced TaeKwonDo
Ages 6 to adult. This class teaches higher levels of hand and foot techniques and offensive and defensive moves for competition and/or self-defense. Advance from Blue belt through Black Belt. Class held in gymnasium.
Thursdays, 8:00-9:30 p.m.
Class fee $78* ($72 for each additional family member);
Full members pay only $41* ($35 for each additional family member)

Sports

“1-ON-1” Youth & Adult Basketball Personal Training
One-hour sessions for ages 3 and up. Coach Dauffus Jackson has been coaching youth basketball  and involved with organized basketball for over 20 years. He attended Cardinal Ritter College Prep High School and graduated from St. Louis University. He stresses strong fundamentals and positive thinking in his sessions through demonstrations, drills and offers positive feedback to his students.
       1 session:  $40; $35 for full members
     3 sessions: $110; $100 for full members
     5 sessions: $165; $150 for full members
   10 sessions: $300; $250 for full members

CPR for the Professional Rescuer

There are currently no scheduled dates for CPR certification through the Edward Jones Family YMCA.  Please contact a local YMCA for a list of their upcoming CPR certification classes.

Covers CPR for the adult, infant and child two-man rescuer CPR, use of resuscitation mask, AED and oxygen tank. Students earn CPR/AED/Oxy Admin certification valid for one year. 

Lifeguarding Certification

There are currently no scheduled dates for Lifeguarding certification through the Edward Jones Family YMCA.  Please contact a local YMCA for a list of their upcoming Lifeguarding certification classes.

Want to become a Lifeguard? Get certified through the YMCA!
This course provides you with the following certifications:

  • YMCA Lifeguard
  • Standard First Aid
  • CPR/AED-PR
  • Emergency O2
     

All participants must be at least 16 years by the first day of the class.  We train the YMCA Lifeguard program, which is very similar to the American Red Cross lifeguard program.  The training is 30 hours long & the CPR/AED-PR, First Aid & Emergency Oxygen training is about 8 hours long in addition to the 30 hours of lifeguard training.  If you would like to work at the YMCA as a lifeguard, you must first fill out an application & then contact Patty the aquatics director at the number listed below or by email to set up an interview.  If you would like to just take the training & use the certifications at a non-YMCA pool, please be aware of the fees listed below.  

Lifeguard class requirements:
Must be at least 16 years old
Must be able to swim 500 yards (20 lengths)
Must be able to tread water without using your hands for 2-minutes
Must be mature enough to understand the material (book work & water skills)
Must have parental consent if under 18 years old
Must attend all sessions & participate 100% of the time
**There is no guarantee that everyone will pass the lifeguard class; ALL requirements must be completed.  On the written test, participants must score 80% or more correct on each section & perform all of the water skills/rescues correctly in order to pass.
